Did you know that you are four times as likely to get into a fatal car accident over Memorial Day weekend as opposed to any other regular weekend? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that Memorial Day has an average of 312 traffic fatalities per year. That is more than they found for Labor Day or even the Fourth of July. Follow these steps below to stay safe on the roads this Memorial Day weekend.

1. Buckle up

The lack of a seat belt is one of the leading causes of vehicular fatalities. Although it is required by law, many people choose to ignore this law and it does not end well for them. Buckle up this Memorial Day weekend.

2. Designate a sober driver or arrange other transportation

If you will be drinking this Memorial Day weekend, be sure to designate a sober driver. Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities. Drive sober so that you are not added to the statistic.

3. Drive slowly

Speed is responsible for over a quarter of traffic accidents. If you are in question of the speed limit, just slow down. It is better to drive slow and careful so that you can keep an eye out for other drivers who may be impaired.

4. Be prepared

Before you head to your Memorial Day destination, be sure you are prepared. Make sure your car holds a first aid kit, any necessities such as water and a change of clothes, and a spare tire. Also be sure that your car has good oil life and tire pressure.

5. Drive without distractions

On Memorial Day weekend, not only do you have to make sure you are driving sober, but also others. That is why it is important to drive without any distractions so you can keep your eyes on the road and look out for any possible hazards.

6. Check your car before locking it

The leading cause of non-crash related fatalities for children is vehicular heatstroke. Be sure to check your back seats for children or pets before locking your car and walking away.
